Luke 2:10-14

10 But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. 11 Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord. 12 This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.”

13 Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared praising God and saying,

14 “Glory to God in the highest heaven,

and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.”

Reflection

My son is very particular about his clothes.  Things are never just “okay”.  When he likes an article of clothing, we will all know within a minute of him putting it on and he will tell the world.  I recently bought him a new pair of jeans and moments later I heard him outside telling everyone about his great new jeans, and how the pockets were huge, and how comfortable they were.

If a new pair of pants are worth being that excited about, how much more important is it to be excited about Jesus?

The birth of Jesus was important news, and the angels were jubilant!  Can you imagine what a chorus of angels praising God must have sounded like?  This wasn’t just another announcement–this was the announcement.  May we also have the same excitement and joy in Jesus as a child with his favourite new jeans—uncontainable, genuine, and eager for everyone to hear.

Questions

  • How can we nurture an enthusiasm for the good news of Jesus?
  • What is something in your life that you’re excited about?  How does that compare with your excitement for Jesus?

Family Activity

  • Have everyone write down several ways that Jesus brings you joy in your life, and put them in a jar.  Throughout the following week, share one or two of those things together at the dinner table.

Prayer

  • God, help us to worship you with the same joy and excitement that the angels had.  Let our hearts always be overflowing with praise for you.
